The Role
Reporting directly to the Chief Business Officer, the Vice President – Energy will have overall responsibility for the commercial activities of the Energy Business Unit, leading business development, sales, tendering, pricing, marketing and aftermarket activities to drive profitable growth.
This is a strategic leadership role where you will own the Energy commercial strategy, sales pipeline and order intake, ensuring they align with the wider business objectives and long-term growth plans. You will lead the development of new business opportunities whilst strengthening existing customer relationships, expanding the customer base beyond key anchor accounts and positioning the business within attractive target markets.
Working alongside the Chief Business Officer, you will share accountability for the commercial P&L of the Energy division, taking ownership of revenue growth, gross margin, profitability and the overall commercial performance of the business unit. You will ensure strong commercial discipline across all tendering, pricing and bid activities, maintaining a focus on delivering profitable and repeatable business.
The successful candidate will build and maintain strong customer and partner relationships whilst gathering and applying market, customer and competitor intelligence to shape market positioning, identify future opportunities and influence the product and solution roadmap.
You will be responsible for producing and maintaining the Energy sales forecast and demand plan, supporting capacity planning, budgeting and resource allocation alongside senior leadership. Working closely with Engineering and Delivery teams, you will ensure customer requirements are translated into commercially viable and technically deliverable solutions that can be successfully configured and delivered.
Another key aspect of the role is developing and implementing the Energy aftermarket strategy, covering service, support, spare parts and upgrade opportunities to generate recurring revenue across the installed customer base. As the business continues to grow, this function may develop into a dedicated aftermarket team supporting both the Energy and Energy & Rail divisions.
You will also define, monitor and report Energy order intake, pipeline performance and commercial KPIs to the Senior Management Leadership Team and Board, ensuring appropriate actions are taken to deliver monthly objectives and long-term business performance.
As the Energy division expands, you will develop the commercial team, build capability, establish effective ways of working and provide strong leadership across the business. As a member of the Senior Management Leadership Team, you will contribute to the wider business strategy and provide commercial leadership across the organisation while maintaining the highest standards of health, safety and environmental compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and own the Energy commercial strategy, pipeline and order intake in line with the company’s strategic objectives.
- Share responsibility with the Chief Business Officer for the Energy commercial P&L, including revenue, gross margin and profitability.
- Drive business development, tendering, pricing and marketing activities across the Energy market.
- Build and develop long-term customer and partner relationships whilst expanding the customer base beyond existing key accounts.
- Gather and utilise customer, market and competitor intelligence to influence market positioning and future solution development.
- Produce and maintain Energy sales forecasts and demand plans to support budgeting, resource planning and operational delivery.
- Work collaboratively with Engineering and Delivery teams to develop commercially successful, configurable engineering solutions.
- Develop and own the Energy aftermarket strategy, creating recurring revenue through service, support, upgrades and spare parts.
- Monitor, track and report commercial KPIs, sales pipeline and order intake to senior leadership and the Board.
- Build and develop the Energy commercial team as the business continues to scale.
- Contribute to overall business strategy as part of the Senior Management Leadership Team.
- Ensure compliance with all Health, Safety and Environmental policies and safe systems of work.
The Candidate
The ideal candidate will hold a degree, preferably with at least an Upper Second-Class Honours, in Engineering, Commercial, Business or a related discipline. A postgraduate qualification, such as an MBA, would be advantageous but is not essential.
You will have an outstanding track record of commercial leadership within the energy or power sectors, with experience in markets such as EV charging, data centres or wider energy infrastructure. You will be able to demonstrate success in winning and growing customer accounts, developing sales pipelines and order books, leading tendering and pricing activities and converting opportunities into profitable business.
Previous experience managing commercial teams and owning a commercial budget or P&L is essential, together with the ability to build and scale a business unit, product line or new market from an early stage. Experience selling engineered or configure-to-order products and solutions within a manufacturing environment would be highly beneficial.
The successful candidate will possess excellent commercial judgement, exceptional relationship-building skills and the ability to work closely with engineering teams to develop configurable, customer-focused solutions. You will be commercially astute, growth-oriented and comfortable operating within a fast-paced leadership environment.
Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills are essential, alongside proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Experience using CRM and pipeline management systems such as HubSpot, together with knowledge of commercial modelling, bid costing, margin analysis and MRP/ERP systems, would be highly advantageous. An understanding of Artificial Intelligence and its application within commercial and market analysis activities would also be beneficial.
