HR Manager

Location: Stockton-on-Tees
Reports to: Managing Director

The Company

We are working with an ambitious and growing engineering and construction services business that provides specialist HV & LV Electrical and Instrumentation services across some of the UK’s largest and most critical infrastructure projects.

Operating across sectors including Offshore Wind, Power & Renewables, Oil, Gas & Chemicals, Nuclear & Defence, Pharmaceutical & Healthcare, Data Centres, Industrial Manufacturing and Mining, the business has built a strong reputation for delivering complex projects through a collaborative, one-team approach.

As the company continues to grow, they are reshaping their HR function and are now looking to appoint a hands-on HR Manager to take ownership of the day-to-day people function and work closely with both office and site-based teams.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the HR Manager will take ownership of the HR function from end to end.

This is very much a hands-on, delivery-focused position rather than a purely strategic or advisory HR role. You will manage and develop the HR team, handle employee relations matters and ensure HR policies and procedures are practical, compliant and appropriate for a fast-moving engineering and construction environment.

The successful person will be comfortable operating across both site and office environments and confident working closely with operational leaders, site managers and the wider workforce.

Key Responsibilities

You will lead, manage and develop the HR team, ensuring responsibilities are delegated effectively and the team remains accountable for delivery.

You will act as a key point of contact for employee relations matters, confidently managing disciplinary, grievance and performance-related situations when required.

Working closely with project and site leadership, you will support workforce planning across a diverse portfolio of engineering and construction projects.

You will design, implement and embed practical HR policies and procedures that balance employment law compliance with the operational requirements and pace of the business.

The role will also take ownership of recruitment and resourcing across both office and site-based positions, partnering closely with hiring managers throughout the organisation.

You will manage matters relating to pay, terms and conditions for site-based engineering and construction employees, including working with relevant national and sector agreements such as NAECI where applicable.

Alongside this, you will drive employee engagement, culture and retention initiatives, ensure compliance with UK employment law and work closely with the HSQE function on people-related health and safety matters.

You will also provide the senior leadership team with clear reporting around HR metrics, workforce risk and employee relations trends.

About You

We are looking for someone with a strong HR background gained within engineering, construction or a related project-delivery environment. You should understand site culture, operational pressures and the challenges associated with managing a site-based or mobile workforce.

You will be a confident and assertive communicator who is comfortable challenging senior stakeholders when required, while also having the people skills to build strong relationships at every level of the organisation.

Previous experience managing a team is important, alongside a strong working knowledge of UK employment law and experience implementing practical HR policies and procedures.

Experience of managing disciplinary, grievance and performance-related matters is essential, with the ability to approach sensitive situations calmly, professionally and fairly.

Experience working within the NAECI framework, a CIPD qualification or equivalent experience, and previous exposure to a significant site-based workforce would all be advantageous.
